My Body of Work

Colorful Women is a series of illustrations and paintings of women. Through color, shape and the use of the human female figure, this series’ objective is to open viewers eyes to feminine beauty that is beyond the curves, clothes, makeup and teased hair. These images convey a beauty that comes from the colorful nuances of women’s personalities, emotions, and experiences.

Work About My Skin and Culture

Life effects our art. Coming back to Detroit and all of the divisiveness in our society, especially the racial unrest that has bubbled to the American surface, has made me look deeply at my Blackness and my gender and how these parts of me have created my American experience. The work below are a few studies and works that look deeply into the two-ness of my America. Women and Black. African and American.

3 x 3 Portraits and Sketches

From 2007 – 2017, I’ve drawn these 3×3 portraits of women. It was my answer to creating art in limited spaces and with limited resources. It is how I documented the women I met, the women in my life and my own love, tragedies and misunderstandings. Some were done in color using the simple paper, ink and crayons. Others were either simpler; ink on paper. All made to understand what seems to be the most mysterious part of life for me and that is womanhood and femininity. Enjoy
