Curated by Myett Risker, “Women,” an annual exhibition that honors and celebrates women, is now accepting art and performance submissions. Expressed through the vision of female artists, the exhibition commemorates women through various mediums and themes displaying their gifts, strengths and talents. The 10th annual “Women” exhibition will be on view at Andy’s Gallery March 7, 2020.
Since 1987 March has been observed nationally as Women’s History Month. “In 1980, we were a group of women who noticed that women were absent from our texts. No more than 3% of the content was devoted to women. Girls had few role models. Girls and boys and many adults assumed women did nothing important,” states The National Women’s History Project (NWHP), the organization responsible lobbying congress to declare the entire month of March National Women’s Month.
Each year, the National Women’s History Project selects a theme that highlights achievements of women, by distinguished women in specific fields, from medicine and the environment to art and politics. Women recognized in previous years have included Freedom Fighter, Harriet Tubman “Grandma Moses”; Congresswoman, Barbara Jordan; Actress, Sigourney Weaver; and, Women’s Advocate, Gloria Steinem.
This year’s theme, “Valiant Women of the Vote.” Our 2020 theme celebrates the women who have fought for woman’s right to vote in the United States. In recognition of the centennial of the 19th Amendment, we will honor women from the original suffrage movement as well as 20th and 21st century women who have continued the struggle (fighting against poll taxes, literacy tests, voter roll purges, and other more contemporary forms of voter suppression) to ensure voting rights for all.
