Unless you live under a rock, you have probably heard about Occupy Wall Street movement. From reading my news feeds on Facebook and Twitter, it looks like many people do not understand completely what this movement is about.
I think one of the best descriptions I’ve found for Occupy was written by Mike McCready for the Huffington Post. You can even watch the video below:
Because many of us are part of that 99% who tries daily to make the American dream come true for ourselves and our families with great difficulty. One of the statements that Mike wrote in his post was “Survival of the Fittest” mentality. This is how America has been working for decades and for many centuries, it has put us on top; but like everything, the world we live in has changed, and with that, so does the American philosophy.
Occupy has grown into a movement specific to different cities and Detroit is one of those locations where this movement has large support and a loyal following. I cannot speak on what is happening in other cities, but here, Occupy Detroit is a testament to the Detroit spirit of taking care of those who are in need.
At Campus Martius Grand Circus Park, tents and people have “occupied” this location as a base for the movement. In this space you will find some of Detroit’s people who are struggling the most – our homeless. Occupy and those supporting it are keeping these Detroiters warm and fed with the belief that “If change is to occur, it must start in our own backyards.” But it is more than a place for the homeless – it is a place for people to see another side of things – a human side. We have been making so many decisions for our world based on politics and economy and not on humanity. I think that is what Occupy Detroit is…a human voice sayinng “I am here and I count!”
October 28th – Occupy Detroit will be protest the cuts in our public transportation. It is at 4PM. Transportation is such an important part to our well being. Please attend.
