Sometimes I get bored and I will stop by my parents, sisters or brothers places and see if they want to just take a ride through Detroit with me and see what we see. It is a fun thing that usually gets me and whoever my companions are for the ride, to some interesting places. Today my nieces wanted to take the adventure. We decided to ride down Livernois. Livernois is this wonderful Avenue full mom and pop shops that runs through Detroit into the suburbs.
I usually stop at about Seven Mile Road when I travel Livernois, but today, we decided to keep going and found ourselves in Ferndale near a place called the Rust Belt Artist Market. I’ve passed this building – with it’s huge orange letters and brick facade several times, telling myself that I would stop one day. Today was the day.
There were so many different and unique types of arts and crafts. I nor the kids could believe our eyes. One of my favorite things I saw at the market were license plates made into bracelets and necklaces. I loved how open and relaxing the atmosphere felt and that the room was filled with things that cost little money and big money – yet it was all displayed the same – In an open way to be viewed, touched and enjoyed.
Metro Detroit is filled with so much artistic beauty. While at the market, I met a man named David who was representing Detroit Lives. Talking to him while he shared his story about what brought him to Detroit brought to mind that Detroit goes beyond city limits. It is more than a city. It is a movement. Next time I will go to Rust Belt with money (shouldn’t ever go on adventures without money). This adventure ended well. On to the next.
