Greening Detroit and the U.S. Social Forum

In a couple of weeks, I am heading to Detroit to take part in the U.S. Social Forum. During the forum, people come from all over the world to discuss economical and ecological solutions for the crisis that we are currently in and the hope is that the discussions will lead to implementations and a movement to a better world.
We all want the world that we live in to be a wonderful, peaceful place and the only way we can do that is to plan to make this happen. Detroit was chosen as the location for the forum this year because it is a symbol of the results of our poor national and international policies destroying a city that once flourished. I may be biased here because Detroit is my hometown, but I think it is the best place to discuss the issues that can turn America around. I have seen this city go through dilapidation; yet, the people of Detroit never lose hope. We are fighters, and workers and know that working together, we can change the city and the world.

Greening our society is on the minds of many, even more so in Detroit. There are several projects going on in Detroit to move it into a more diverse and lucrative market of green energy sources and green living. Recently, the organization, Greening of Detroit purchased land to develop a farm to grow produce locally. Tree farms are popping up around the city to fulfill the lack of trees in Detroit, which occurred because of the blight of the city and trees dying from Dutch Elm disease. Initiatives like Michigan Green Job Initiative, a $6 million investment, are working to train Detroiters to work in the new green market. You can stumble over a lot of events, organizations, products and projects with GREEN DETROIT written all over them. Seeing this has given me more hope that my hometown will be a bustling city again.

THE GREEN ARTIST MOVEMENT:
A movement cannot be a movement without artist. Here are a few eco-friendly and eco-awareness art projects going on in Detroit.

I am hoping that when I go to the forum in Detroit, that I will meet more artist creating art supporting the greening of Detroit. Detroit is such a fertile ground for creativity and for artist. Sometimes I envy artist of Detroit, having so much inspiration and opportunity. If you cannot make it to Detroit this summer, there are ways to take part in the US Social Forum right from your home.
